A tiny puppy was brought to our shelter in Karacabey. It was about four months old at most; a male puppy, his hair honey coloured and  soft and smooth as silk. Someone had heard him whining in the garden of a dilapidated, empty building in the centre of Karacabey town. We named him Karacan. His front right leg had been broken in the middle and was double bent and set like that.

When we took him to a vet in Bursa specilizing in fractures it was decided that the best thing was to leave it be. Karacan was skeletal and he was refusing to eat.

I was constantly checking in on him, stroking him and trying to get him eat little morsels I put in his mouth. I kept on extending my stay in Karacabey for Karacan, to be able to spend more time with him. Gradually he came to make his peace with the world where he had been so unhappy so far. He came to trust us and believe that he was loved and valued. And so he ended his hunger strike.
